Junior Research Group I Effects of physical activity and exercise on motor and cognitive performance in older adults

The Lifestyle-Integrated Functional Exercise (LiFE) program has proven effective in improving strength, balance, and physical activity while simultaneously reducing falls in older people via incorporating exercises in recurring daily tasks. However, implementing the original LiFE program includes high financial requirements and human resources. Therefore, in LiFE-is-LiFE we investigate whether implementing LiFE in groups (gLiFE) is not inferior to the individually delivered iLiFE in terms of reducing falls per physical activity. On the same note, we expect gLiFE to be more cost-effective as compared to iLiFE.

In this multicenter non-inferiority trial starting in 2018, 300 participants (> 70 years; confirmed fallers or with high falls risk) will be randomized in either iLiFE or gLiFE. Both groups will undergo the same strength and balance exercises and habitualization strategies as described in the LiFE programme, however, based on different approaches of delivery. Compared to iLiFE, we expect gLiFE (a) to reduce falls per physical activity by a similar rate; (b) to be more cost-effective; (c) to comparably enhance physical performance in terms of strength and balance as well as physical activity. As non-inferiority margin we accept a 20% difference to the original LiFE as a comparable reduction.

Looking at the economic and societal benefit, this study is of high practical relevance as non-inferiority of gLiFE would implicate facilitation of nationwide implementation due to lower financial and personnel requirements. In this way, the program would be better accessible to subjects with falls risk.
